Audiobook Quality Standards & ACX Requirements

Audiobook quality standards aren’t suggestions. They’re hard technical requirements that decide if your audiobook makes it onto Audible or gets rejected and sent back for rework. Most rejections come down to a small set of specifications that authors either don’t know or don’t measure. Learning these standards before recording starts saves weeks of back-and-forth and protects your launch timeline.

This post covers the technical audio quality standards every audiobook needs to meet, the tools to measure them, and the common quality problems that trip up first-time productions.

Why Quality Standards Exist

Audiobook listeners consume audio in conditions that expose every flaw. Car speakers, earbuds during exercise, kitchen speakers while cooking, headphones during commutes. Audio that sounds fine in a studio can have serious problems when played through real listener environments.

Platforms like Audible enforce technical standards to ensure baseline quality across their catalog. A book with inconsistent levels chapter-to-chapter is jarring. A book with audible background noise is fatiguing to listen to for hours. A book that’s too quiet forces listeners to raise volume, then gets blasted when the next book starts.

The standards aren’t arbitrary. They’re tuned for how listeners actually consume audio, which means meeting them produces a noticeably better listening experience.

ACX Technical Specifications

ACX is the dominant audiobook distribution platform, and its specifications have become the de facto industry standard. Most other platforms accept ACX-compliant files without additional adjustments.

Peak Level

Peak level measures the loudest moment in your audio. ACX requires peaks between -3 dB and -6 dB. Files with peaks above -3 dB risk clipping on listener devices. Files with peaks below -6 dB sound too quiet compared to other audiobooks.

To measure peak levels, use a level meter in your audio software. Audacity, Reaper, Adobe Audition, and Pro Tools all show peak levels in real time during playback. Plan to spot-check peaks throughout the audiobook, not just at the loudest moments.

RMS Level

RMS (Root Mean Square) measures the average loudness of your audio over time. ACX requires RMS between -18 dB and -23 dB. This range produces audio that sounds at a similar perceived volume to professionally produced audiobooks.

RMS is harder to measure than peak because it requires sustained measurement over time. Use an RMS meter or a loudness analyzer to check. iZotope RX, Auphonic, and ACX-specific plugins handle this measurement well.

Noise Floor

Noise floor is the level of background sound when no one is speaking. ACX requires noise floor below -60 dB. Lower is better. Quiet recording spaces produce noise floors at -65 dB to -75 dB.

Noise floor problems come from rooms with poor acoustic treatment, computer fans near the mic, HVAC systems running during recording, or electrical interference. Fixing the source is much better than relying on noise reduction software to clean up the audio in post.

To measure noise floor, record 5 to 10 seconds of silence in your recording space, then check the levels. The displayed level during this silence is your noise floor.

Room Tone

Every audio file needs 0.5 to 1 second of room tone at the start and end of the file. Room tone is the natural ambient sound of your recording space when no one is speaking. It bridges between silence and speech smoothly.

Files without room tone sound abrupt. The audio just starts mid-thought from silence, which is jarring to listeners. Adding room tone is a quick fix in any audio software, but it has to be present in every chapter file.

File Format Requirements

ACX specifies the file format for every uploaded audiobook chapter.

MP3 format at 192 kbps constant bit rate. Not variable bit rate. Not 128 kbps or 320 kbps. 192 kbps CBR.

44.1 kHz sample rate. Some recording happens at 48 kHz initially, but final delivery files must be 44.1 kHz.

Mono channel. Not stereo. Audiobooks are recorded and delivered as single-channel audio. Files delivered in stereo get rejected.

Each chapter as a separate file. One file per chapter, with chapter numbers in the file names for clarity.

Each file under 120 minutes. Chapters that run longer than 2 hours of audio need to be split into multiple files.

Most audio software exports to these specs once configured. Set up your export settings once and reuse them for every chapter to avoid mistakes.

Common Quality Problems

A few problems show up over and over in audiobook submissions.

Inconsistent levels across chapters. The first chapter is at -18 dB RMS. The fifth chapter drifts to -22 dB. The tenth chapter is back at -19 dB. Listeners notice these shifts even if they can’t name what they’re hearing. Fix by mastering all chapters to the same target during final passes.

Audible breaths between sentences. Untrained narrators breathe loudly into the mic. The breaths get recorded and stay in the final audio unless edited out. Some breath is natural and acceptable. Loud, repeated, or distracting breaths are not.

Mouth clicks and lip smacks. Saliva sounds, dry mouth clicks, and lip smacks happen during reading. Most are inaudible to the speaker but pick up clearly on a quality mic. Editors remove these one by one. DIY narrators often miss many of them.

Sibilance and plosives. Sharp “s” sounds and explosive “p” sounds create harsh audio that listeners find fatiguing. Pop filters and proper mic distance reduce these. De-essing in post handles what remains.

Background noise bleed. Cars passing outside. Kids playing in the next room. The neighbor’s lawnmower. Recordings made in noisy environments suffer from these intrusions, which noise reduction can only partially fix.

Echo and reverb. Untreated rooms produce echo that makes audio sound amateur. Acoustic treatment is the only real fix. Noise reduction software cannot remove room reverb from recorded audio.

Inconsistent room tone. If you record some sessions in one location and others in a different location, the room tone differs between sessions and listeners notice. Record the entire book in the same space if possible.

Tools for Measuring Quality

Several tools help you check audio quality against ACX standards.

ACX’s own audio checker is the most reliable test. Submit a sample file through ACX’s tools and the system tells you exactly which specs you’re meeting and which you’re not.

Auphonic is a web-based service that analyzes and processes audio to hit broadcast standards including ACX. It’s especially useful for batch-checking all your chapters at once.

iZotope RX includes specific tools for noise reduction, de-clicking, de-essing, and loudness compliance. It’s the industry standard for audio repair.

Audacity (free) has built-in level meters and basic noise reduction. Sufficient for entry-level quality checking.

Reaper, Adobe Audition, and Pro Tools all have professional metering and analysis tools built in. Use these as part of your normal editing workflow.

Building a Quality Checklist

Before submitting any audiobook to ACX, run through a checklist.

Confirm every chapter file is mono, 44.1 kHz, 192 kbps MP3 CBR. Confirm every chapter file is under 120 minutes. Confirm every chapter file has 0.5 to 1 second of room tone at start and end. Confirm peak levels in every chapter fall between -3 dB and -6 dB. Confirm RMS levels in every chapter fall between -18 dB and -23 dB. Confirm noise floor in every chapter sits below -60 dB. Listen to every chapter in full for audible noise, mouth sounds, awkward pacing, or technical issues.

Going through this checklist takes 4 to 8 hours for a typical full-length audiobook. The time investment is far less than the cost of a rejection from ACX and the resulting resubmission cycle. Build the checklist into your project workflow rather than treating it as a final hurdle, and the quality standards become a normal part of production rather than a last-minute scramble.

Audiobook quality standards exist to keep the listening experience clean and professional. Meeting them isn’t optional if you want your book on major platforms, and exceeding them produces audiobooks that listeners actually enjoy from start to finish. The work is technical but learnable, and the standards are the same if you’re producing your first audiobook or your fiftieth. Treat the checklist as part of your standard workflow rather than a final hurdle, and quality issues stop being launch-blockers.
