Few things destroy a book listing faster than a blurry cover. A fuzzy thumbnail signals amateur production before readers ever see your title or read your blurb. The frustrating part is that blurry book covers happen even to authors who hired professional designers, paid for stock photos, and thought they did everything right. The technical requirements for book covers are specific, the standards differ across platforms, and small mistakes in file preparation produce results that look great on screen but blur when published.
This post walks through why book covers go blurry, the technical specifications that prevent the problem, and how to verify your cover before submitting.
Why Book Covers Go Blurry
Blurry covers usually come from one of four root causes.
Insufficient resolution. The image doesn’t have enough pixels for the size it’s being displayed or printed at. This is the most common cause.
Wrong color mode. The image is in RGB when print requires CMYK, or vice versa. Color conversion at the platform level can introduce blur.
Compression artifacts. The file was saved with too much compression, which produces visible fuzziness especially around text and detailed elements.
Improper scaling. The image was created at one size and stretched to fit another, which softens details and produces a fuzzy appearance.
Each cause has a specific fix. Knowing which one is happening to your cover lets you address it correctly rather than guessing.
DPI Versus PPI Explained
DPI and PPI are often used interchangeably but mean different things.
DPI (dots per inch) refers to how many ink dots a printer puts down per inch. This is a printing concept.
PPI (pixels per inch) refers to how many pixels exist in a digital image per inch. This is a digital image concept.
Book platforms typically use the terms loosely. When KDP says “300 DPI minimum,” they mean 300 PPI in your source file. The actual print DPI is determined by the printing equipment.
The practical rule. For print covers, design at 300 PPI in your source files. For digital-only covers (ebook listings on Amazon, Apple Books, etc.), 72 PPI is enough but 300 PPI doesn’t hurt.
Image Dimensions for Different Formats
Different formats require different image dimensions.
Ebook Covers
Amazon Kindle requires a minimum of 1000 x 1600 pixels for ebook covers, with 2560 x 1600 recommended. The ratio should be 1:1.6 (height being 1.6 times the width).
Apple Books requires a minimum of 1400 x 2240 pixels with the same 1:1.6 ratio.
Most platforms display ebook covers at much smaller sizes (200 x 320 pixels for thumbnails), but the larger source file ensures the image stays sharp when zoomed in or displayed on retina displays.
Paperback Covers
KDP Print and IngramSpark provide template files for each trim size. A 6×9 inch paperback has different dimensions than a 5×8 paperback.
The general rule. Design at 300 PPI for the trim size plus bleed (0.125 inches on each side). A 6×9 inch paperback with bleed produces a final design size of roughly 6.25 x 9.25 inches at 300 PPI, which equals 1875 x 2775 pixels for the front cover panel.
The full paperback cover includes front, spine, and back panels in a single wraparound file. The total dimensions depend on book thickness, which depends on page count and paper type.
Hardcover Covers
Hardcover covers add complications. Dust jackets have their own dimensions including front, spine, back, and flap panels. Case-bound covers without jackets follow different specifications.
KDP Hardcover and IngramSpark have separate template files for each hardcover format. Use the templates exactly. Hardcover dimensions don’t tolerate guesswork.
Audiobook Covers
Audible requires a square cover at minimum 2400 x 2400 pixels. The cover should be readable at small thumbnail sizes since audiobook listings often appear with small visual elements.
Audio covers usually adapt from ebook covers by recropping to square. Make sure your designer provides a square version sized for audio in addition to the standard rectangular ebook cover.
File Format Choices
The file format you submit affects final image quality.
JPEG is the most common format for cover files. It supports millions of colors and creates relatively small file sizes. The trade-off is that JPEG uses lossy compression. Heavy compression produces visible artifacts.
Save JPEGs at maximum quality (level 12 in Photoshop, “100” in many other programs). Lower quality settings produce blur.
PNG preserves detail better than JPEG but produces larger file sizes. Most platforms accept PNG for ebook covers but require JPEG for print covers.
PDF is required for paperback and hardcover print covers on most platforms. PDF preserves all the design elements at full quality and is the standard for print production.
TIFF is sometimes accepted for print and offers the highest quality, but file sizes are very large. Most authors don’t need TIFF unless their print provider specifically requires it.
The general rule. Use PDF for print. Use JPEG at maximum quality for ebook. Use PNG if your platform specifically supports it and you have strong contrast in your design.
Color Mode Issues
Print and digital use different color modes.
RGB (red, green, blue) is the digital color mode. Used for screens. Includes colors that print can’t reproduce.
CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is the print color mode. Used for printing. Has a smaller color range than RGB.
Submitting an RGB file for print causes the platform to convert it to CMYK, which can shift colors and introduce subtle blur. Designing in CMYK from the start avoids this issue.
For ebook covers, RGB is correct. For print covers, CMYK is correct.
Many cover designers use RGB for everything and let the platform handle conversion. This usually works but occasionally produces unexpected results. Designers who work in the correct color mode for each output get more predictable results.
Avoiding Compression Problems
Compression introduces blur in two main ways.
Saving with low quality settings. JPEG at 50% quality looks much worse than JPEG at 100% quality. Always save covers at maximum quality.
Re-saving multiple times. Each time a JPEG is saved, additional compression is applied. Saving once at maximum quality produces a clean file. Saving five times at 90% quality each produces a much worse file.
Work from a master file in lossless format (PSD, AI, or layered TIFF). Save the JPEG export once when you’re ready to submit. Don’t keep saving and re-saving the JPEG.
When you need to make changes, return to the master file, make changes there, and export a new JPEG. Don’t edit the JPEG directly.
Verifying Your Cover Before Submission
Several checks catch blur problems before they end up on a published listing.
Zoom in to 100% in your design software. If the image looks blurry at 100% zoom, it will look blurry when published. The display preview at smaller zoom levels can hide problems.
Check the resolution settings. In Photoshop, Image > Image Size shows current PPI. Make sure it’s 300 for print files. The dimensions should match your platform’s requirements.
Test print at the actual size if possible. For paperback covers, printing the file at 100% scale on a regular printer reveals problems that aren’t visible on screen.
View the platform’s preview before publishing. KDP, Apple Books, and other platforms show a preview of how your cover will appear. Look carefully at the thumbnail view, since this is what most readers see first.
Use the Look Inside feature after publishing to verify cover quality. If you see problems, you can update the cover file and republish.
Common Cover File Mistakes
A few patterns regularly produce blurry covers.
Using web images as cover sources. A 600 x 900 pixel image looks fine on screen but is far too small for print or even high-resolution ebook display. Always work from images at proper resolution.
Resizing up. Taking a small image and stretching it to be larger produces blur. Software can interpolate but can’t add detail that wasn’t in the original.
Wrong template version. Print templates change occasionally as platforms update specifications. Using an old template can produce covers that don’t match current requirements.
Sending the wrong file. Authors sometimes upload draft files instead of final versions. Always verify you’re submitting the latest, properly prepared file.
Ignoring color mode. Submitting an RGB file when CMYK is required produces unpredictable color shifts and occasionally introduces blur during conversion.
Skipping the bleed area on print. Print covers need 0.125 inches of bleed extending past the trim line. Files without bleed get rejected or printed with white edges showing.
Blurry book covers are almost always preventable with proper file preparation. The technical requirements take some learning, but the rules are stable across most platforms. Authors who treat cover file preparation seriously avoid the production problems that drag down sales of otherwise good books. The hour spent verifying your cover file specs is much less expensive than the months of slower sales that come from publishing with a fuzzy cover that signals amateur production to every reader who sees the listing.
